How do you present the World's Greatest Entertainer on the air? You get out of the way and let him do his stuff! That's what the producers of The Lifebuoy Show did for Al Jolson in t his high-powered 1937 variety series in 1937. Jolson had floundered during his tenure on the hour-long Shell Chateau during 1935-36, with too much going on in the way of bad jokes, ill-fitting guest stars, turgid dramatic skits and other cluttery accoutrements. His new sponsors offered Jolson a concise half-hour format -- he'd share his microphone with only one guest per week, turn most of the jokes over to Parkyakarkus or Martha Raye, and let Jolie focus on his larger-than-life musical performances.
