BOB TROUT ANNOUNCING WWII IS OVER
BOB TROUT ANNOUNCING WWII IS OVER
By 1945, CBS newsman Robert Trout was one of the leading journalists on radio -- a brisk, energetic voice heard whenever top stories were breaking. It was Trout who anchored the CBS coverage of the Allied invasion of Europe early on D-Day morning, and it was Trout who, just a little over a year later, delivered the dramatic announcement of Japan's full acceptance of Allied surrender terms. After nearly four days of waiting, of conflicting reports, of fragments of news sifting out of official statements, at fifty-five seconds after 7pm Eastern War Time on August 14th, 1945 Trout relayed the official flash from the White House, declaring that "This, ladies and gentlemen, is the end of the Second World War!"
